Two Options: Below Ground or Above Ground
Below Ground Benefits
- You get to take advantage of the earth’s ground temperature, which rests around 55 degrees, so the worms (Optional – Worms will enter the system naturally from the holes at the bottom of each system.) stay cooler in the summer and are warmer in the winter than an above ground system.
- You can better control the carbon that your compost or bokashi amendment pile produces. When used correctly, you do not have to turn the compost or bokashi pile. When turning and mixing compost, some of the rich carbon created escapes into the air. Layer it correctly and let the soil biology do the rest!
- You can produce finished compost & amended bokashi soil all year round!

Above Ground Benefits
- Easier to install & move to another location if necessary
- The underground water table and buried utilities lines are not application when determining location.

A 4-bin system is the recommended minimum number, so that you have one into which you actively add food scraps, one that is going through the composting process, one that stores finished compost, and one that is ready to receive new food scraps.
